Sorry, I don't remember who said it. The two rocks Wildeve threw in the pond upon seeing Eustacia's fire at their first meeting, could symbolize each of them and foreshadow their deaths. Fire first beckoned him to her and the sound of water also brought him to her and tragically to his death. I thought this symbolized that a hasty decision was soon to be made.
