As you sit back a chuckle at the obvious wittiness of the title, I will explain what I meant for this page. I made it for a discussion of minor characters. What made some of them important to the story. Just let loose and enlighten each other on what you think about the minor characters.

Wow Stephen, it’s FPS* all over again…
Christian freakin Cantle, ladies and gentlemen. What a complete loser. Seriously, this poor guy made me so sorry for him. I almost want to think that his name is a shot at Christianity. Religion isn’t very big in this novel, and it’s certainly not as bluntly pessimistic as GoW was last year (that’s Grapes of Wrath, not Gears of War) , but maybe the cowardice and clumsiness of Christian is Hardy’s own little poke at spirituality. The whole atmosphere of the heath is focused on the self. We can all agree that most of the characters are absolutely selfish. The heath is made up primarily of self made men like the furze cutters and farmers and such. There really is no dependence on God except, the only mention of such things is the church service. Even then, Eustacia gets stabbed with a needle. I guess Hardy doesnt see the church as a comforting environment? Anyway, it’ funny that he chose the name Christian for such a pathetic soul…

*** FPS refers to the amazing title, something you’re famous for in scenario writing.
I have two things… What does FPS have to do with it? And thanks for clarifying GoW, I really was confused for a second.

Oh, title, I get it!
It is the most important part of anything. For those of you that don’t know, the intro isn’t the real attention grabber, it is the title.

minor characters*. they are much like the main characters in this novel, meaning they do not change. Christian is always a wuss, “coffins? did someone say coffins? should we fear death? o no, i just knew it was my time to die because i’m a pathetic little person with no common sense.” Fairway is always the “strong, consistence” type who is endlessly admired by the sorry excuse for human life – Christian. And Granfer Cantle is just there to tell the reader about 50 times about that one time when he was in the army/navy whatever and so everyone should be great and younger and ADD and stupid like him.

*much like the minor characters in real life, Hardy’s minor characters are abysmal.
Okay Seth that was slightly harsh about Grandfer cantle! I thought that Grandfer’s main purpose in the novel was to be the comic relief. In such a heavy book with so many depressing events, a character that makes you laugh is a necessity. For me, that character was Grandfer Cantle. Just my opinion! Yours?- Tiffani
