Hey guys…Kristen said that the heath and Eustacia were paralleled in the book in another post and when I read over Hardy’s descriptions of the two, I realized that the heath sometimes communicates through Eustacia and her emotions. In the chapter ”Queen of Night,” he says Eustacia’s great desire was to be loved: “Love was to her the one cordial which could drive away the eating loneliness of her days.” When Eustacia was not in the process of falling in or out of love with Wildieve and Clym, she was always in a gloomy mood. While she was in love, she was passionate and seemed content. Just the same, the heath seemed content when people who loved it (Clym and the furze cutters) were in it, but oppressive and dull whenever those who disliked it (Eustacia and Wildeve) roamed through it. Any comments or other examples of the heaths characteristics explained through Eustacia’s? – Alyssa
